Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Musadik Masood Malik, has emphasized that cruelty to animals is fundamentally opposed to the principles of humanity. Speaking at a conference on animal welfare in Islamabad, he called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and harsher penalties for those who abuse animals.
Minister's Statement on Animal Rights
Musadik Masood Malik highlighted that a society's moral standing can be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members, including animals. He noted that Pakistan has laws against animal cruelty, but implementation remains weak. The minister urged law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against reported cases of animal abuse.
Call for Public Awareness
He also stressed the need for public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the ethical treatment of animals. "It is our collective responsibility to protect animals from harm," he said. The minister suggested incorporating animal welfare topics into school curricula to foster compassion from a young age.
The conference was attended by representatives from various animal rights organizations, who presented recommendations for improving animal welfare in the country. They called for the establishment of dedicated animal courts and the creation of a national database for animal offenders.
Government's Commitment
Musadik assured the attendees that the government is committed to taking concrete steps to prevent animal cruelty. He mentioned that a task force would be formed to review current legislation and propose amendments to make penalties more stringent. The minister also announced plans to launch a helpline for reporting animal abuse cases.
Animal rights activists welcomed the minister's statements but urged swift action. "Words must be followed by deeds," said a spokesperson for the Pakistan Animal Welfare Society. "We have heard such promises before, and we hope this time there will be tangible results."
The event concluded with a pledge by participants to work together towards a cruelty-free society for animals.
