Prime Minister Announces New Market Closure Timings Across Pakistan

A high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has resulted in significant decisions regarding business operating hours across the country. The meeting, which focused on petroleum products and related economic measures, has mandated that markets, bazaars, and shopping malls in most provinces will now close at 8 pm daily.

Details of the New Regulations

According to an official statement released by the Prime Minister's Office, the new restrictions apply comprehensively to various retail establishments. This includes shops selling daily-use items, departmental stores, and all shopping malls. However, a notable exception has been made for the province of Sindh, where consultations regarding market timings are still ongoing.

The regulations extend beyond general retail establishments. Bakeries, restaurants, tandoors, and all food outlets have been directed to close by 10 pm. Furthermore, marriage halls and marquees will not be permitted to operate after 10 pm. The government has also prohibited wedding events held in private properties and homes after this cutoff time.

Exemptions and Special Provisions

Medical stores and pharmacies have been explicitly exempted from these restrictions, recognizing their essential role in public health. The meeting also made special provisions for divisional headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where markets and shopping malls will be allowed to remain open until 9 pm, one hour later than the national standard.

The new measures will be implemented in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. These decisions come into effect starting April 7, 2026, as confirmed by the Prime Minister's Office.

Regional Variations and Ongoing Consultations

The exemption for Sindh province represents a significant regional variation in policy implementation. Government officials clarified that consultations regarding market timings and related economic matters are still ongoing in Sindh, which explains the temporary exclusion from the nationwide directive.

This decision follows broader discussions about energy conservation and economic management, particularly in relation to petroleum products. The Prime Minister's meeting addressed multiple aspects of economic policy, with market operating hours being one component of a larger strategy.
