Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sherry Rehman has called for a humane approach in anti-encroachment operations across the country, stressing the need to protect the rights of poor and vulnerable families. In a statement issued on Thursday, she urged the authorities to ensure that such drives are conducted with sensitivity and in accordance with the law.
Need for Compassion in Operations
Rehman emphasized that while the government has the right to reclaim encroached land, the process must not cause undue hardship to the poor. She noted that many families living in informal settlements have nowhere else to go and should be provided with alternative housing or compensation before any demolition takes place. She also called for proper notice periods and transparent procedures.
Legal and Social Safeguards
The PPP leader highlighted that anti-encroachment operations often target the poorest segments of society, who are least able to defend their interests. She demanded that all operations be carried out under judicial supervision and that affected families be given adequate time to vacate. Rehman also urged the provincial governments to set up rehabilitation committees to assist displaced families.

Her remarks come amid ongoing anti-encroachment drives in Karachi and other cities, which have faced criticism from opposition parties and human rights groups. The PPP has traditionally opposed harsh measures against informal settlements, advocating instead for regularization and provision of basic amenities.
