Lahore Court Approves Bail for Five Suspects in Tragic Mother-Infant Manhole Death Case
A magisterial court in Lahore has granted bail to five individuals implicated in a heartbreaking case involving the deaths of a young mother and her infant daughter, who lost their lives after falling into an uncovered manhole near the historic Bhati Gate area. The court's decision came during a hearing presided over by Magistrate Shafqat Abbas, following the presentation of the suspects by police upon the expiry of their physical remand.
Details of the Tragic Incident and Court Proceedings
The devastating incident occurred last month in the vicinity of Data Darbar, where 24-year-old Sadia and her 10-month-old daughter Rida tragically fell into an open sewer line. Rescue 1122 teams conducted an extensive search operation, recovering Sadia's body approximately six hours after the incident, while the infant's body was retrieved about sixteen hours later, highlighting the challenging nature of the rescue efforts.
During today's court hearing, the deceased woman's father, Sajid Hussain, and her husband, Murtaza, appeared before the magistrate. In a significant development, both family members informed the court that they did not wish to pursue further legal action against the suspects and had no objection to their acquittal or discharge from the case. This statement from the complainants played a crucial role in the court's subsequent decision.
Suspects Identified and Bail Conditions Set
The five suspects who were granted bail include:
- Project Manager Asghar Sandhu
- Contractor company's CEO Salman Yasin
- Site Incharge Hunzala
- Ahmed Nawaz
- Daniyal
In light of the complainant's statement, Magistrate Shafqat Abbas approved the post-arrest bail applications of all five suspects. The court directed each suspect to furnish surety bonds of Rs50,000 as part of the bail conditions. It is noteworthy that during a previous hearing, the defense counsel had informed the court that the company's owner had voluntarily surrendered to police and presented a cheque of Rs10 million for the aggrieved family.
Initial Police Case and Investigation Controversies
Following the tragic incident, Bhati Gate Police registered a case under Section 322 (manslaughter) of the Pakistan Penal Code based on Hussain's complaint. The complainant had accused officials of leaving the manhole uncovered, which he stated directly led to the deaths of his daughter and granddaughter.
The case initially generated considerable controversy with conflicting statements emerging from various quarters. Some officials questioned whether bodies could travel through the sewerage system, while confusion deepened when a Punjab government spokesperson prematurely termed the incident "fake"—a statement later contradicted by rescue findings and investigation results.
Further complications arose when family members accused Sadia's husband of foul play, citing strained marital relations. Police detained the husband and others for questioning, but investigators later stated that forensic evidence, CCTV footage, and rescue operation findings supported the conclusion that the deaths were accidental rather than intentional.
Political Response and Accountability Demands
The tragedy prompted a strong response from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who had ordered the dismissal and arrest of the suspects involved. She expressed "complete lack of confidence" in the performance of all responsible departments and called for immediate accountability. The Chief Minister specifically held the administration, the Lahore Development Authority, the Water and Sanitation Agency, and other concerned officials responsible for what she termed "gross negligence" in the matter.
This case has highlighted serious concerns about public safety infrastructure in urban areas and the need for stricter oversight of maintenance and construction projects to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
