Punjab and Islamabad Governments Announce Free Public Transport for One Month
In a significant move to provide immediate relief to citizens, the governments of Punjab and Islamabad have announced that all public transport services will be made free of charge for a period of one month. This decision comes in direct response to the recent and substantial increase in fuel prices announced by the federal government.
Punjab Chief Minister's Announcement
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially declared that public transport operating across all cities in the province will be completely free for passengers. Following her directives, individuals using the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus Service, and Speedo Bus will no longer be required to purchase tickets for their journeys.
Furthermore, travel on the environmentally friendly Green Electric Buses will also be provided free of charge to all citizens. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the government stands with the public during these challenging economic times and strongly encouraged citizens to opt for public transport over private vehicles under the current extraordinary circumstances.
Additional Relief Measures for Farmers
In addition to the free transport initiative, Chief Minister Nawaz announced a targeted subsidy for the agricultural sector. Farmers will receive a subsidy of 100 rupees per acre on one liter of diesel, aimed at alleviating some of the financial pressures faced by the farming community.
She contextualized the decision within the global economic landscape, noting that the world is grappling with a crisis exacerbated by conflict. The Chief Minister assured that her administration is committed to relieving public financial burdens as conditions permit and acknowledged the Prime Minister's efforts in providing billions of rupees in relief within a short timeframe to ease public hardships.
Federal Government's Matching Initiative in Islamabad
Simultaneously, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced via social media that public transport in the federal capital, Islamabad, has also been made free for one month. This measure was implemented on the direct instructions of the Prime Minister.
Minister Naqvi stated that the Ministry of Interior will bear the cost of this initiative, which is estimated at 3.5 billion rupees. This coordinated effort between the provincial and federal governments underscores a unified approach to public welfare following the fuel price adjustment.
Background: The Fuel Price Increase
This widespread relief announcement comes just one day after the federal government implemented a sharp increase in fuel prices. The adjustments were substantial:
- The price of petrol was increased by 137.24 rupees per liter.
- The price of diesel was increased by 184.49 rupees per liter.
The abrupt nature of this hike has placed significant financial strain on commuters and the general public, prompting the swift governmental response to offer temporary relief through free public transport services in major regions.
