The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has taken decisive action by sealing a sweets production unit in Daroghawala and a food outlet in Bhati, following rigorous inspections that uncovered severe breaches of food safety protocols. This enforcement drive was initiated under the direct orders of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid, who underscored the critical need for stringent measures to safeguard public health across the region.

Shocking Discoveries During Inspections

During the operation, PFA inspection teams encountered alarming conditions at both locations. They reported the presence of a large number of cockroaches, flies, and mosquitoes, alongside widespread poor cleanliness and unhygienic practices. The situation was further exacerbated by the use of non-food grade detergent for washing utensils, which poses significant health risks to consumers.

Additionally, the authorities found that medical and training certificates for food handlers were completely missing, raising serious concerns about staff competency and hygiene awareness. Freezers at the premises were poorly maintained, contributing to foul odors that permeated the area, indicating potential spoilage and contamination issues.

Zero Tolerance Policy and Ramazan Focus

Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid emphasized that the PFA has adopted a zero-tolerance stance towards food adulteration and unsafe practices. He stated, "There will be zero tolerance for those supplying adulterated or unsafe food. Food adulteration is a threat to public health and will be dealt with firmly." This warning comes as part of broader efforts to ensure food safety, especially during the holy month of Ramazan.

Special teams have been deployed to inspect cooking centers and Sehri and Iftar points throughout Ramazan, aiming to guarantee the provision of safe and hygienic food to the public. These inspections are not only about enforcement but also include awareness campaigns to educate food operators on maintaining proper hygiene standards.

Round-the-Clock Operations for Public Safety

The DG highlighted that round-the-clock operations are currently underway to protect the health of residents in Lahore, with a particular focus on the Ramazan period. He added that any outlet found using substandard ingredients or violating safety norms will face immediate sealing, reinforcing the authority's commitment to public welfare.

This crackdown reflects the PFA's proactive approach to combating food adulteration, which has been identified as a significant threat to community health. By targeting high-risk areas and maintaining continuous surveillance, the authority aims to foster a safer food environment for all consumers in Punjab.
