Punjab Cabinet Conducts Historic Virtual Session Under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif
In a landmark move reflecting the government's commitment to austerity, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif presided over a provincial cabinet meeting conducted entirely via video link for the first time. Ministers and officials participated online, marking a significant shift in administrative operations as part of the ongoing austerity campaign.
Recognition of Ramazan Nigehban Programme Success
During the meeting, the cabinet formally expressed its gratitude for the successful completion of the Ramazan Nigehban Programme. Members acknowledged and appreciated the dedicated efforts of district administrations, police forces, the Bank of Punjab, and other relevant authorities for their effective implementation of the comprehensive relief package, which provided essential support to citizens during the holy month.
Austerity Measures: Salary Contributions Announced
As a key component of the austerity drive, the cabinet approved substantial financial contributions from government officials:
- Cabinet members, special assistants, and parliamentary secretaries will donate two months' salaries to the prime minister's fund.
- Members of the provincial assembly will voluntarily contribute 25 percent of their salary and allowances for a period of two months.
- Government officers of grade 17 and above will contribute their basic salary equivalent to two days to the same fund.
These measures are designed to promote fiscal responsibility and redirect resources toward public welfare initiatives.
Major Development Projects Approved Across Punjab
In addition to austerity, the cabinet greenlit a series of significant development initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure and education in the province:
- Mian Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology in Kasur: Provision of land for the establishment of this new institution, which is expected to enhance technical education and research capabilities in the region.
- Quaid-i-Azam Institute of Sciences in Sargodha: Approval of the charter for this institute, set to focus on advancing scientific education and innovation.
- Sports Complex in Kundian: Approval for a new sports complex, aimed at promoting athletic activities and community engagement in the area.
These projects underscore the government's dual focus on economic prudence and proactive development, ensuring balanced growth across Punjab.
