Punjab Mandates E-Tagging, Launches Cyber Crime Unit

The Punjab government has announced a comprehensive set of security reforms, introducing mandatory electronic tagging for all vehicles, including motorcycles, to enable permanent and more effective monitoring across the province. These decisions were finalized during a high-level law and order session chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who formally authorized the e-tag installation to enhance tracking systems and strengthen crime prevention efforts.

Enhanced Monitoring and Digital Crime Combat

In a significant move to address digital offenses, the provincial administration approved the formation of a dedicated Punjab Cyber Crime Investigation Unit. This unit will include a specialized support cell designed to assist women and young girls affected by online harassment and cyber-related crimes. Authorities will appoint a director to lead the new body, and Online Crime Centers will be established at the district level to ensure swift response and coordination.

Border Security and Surveillance Measures

Officials were instructed to eliminate potential escape corridors for criminal networks operating within Punjab. To tighten border security, the government will regulate access through lesser-known provincial entry routes, install searchlights at key entry points, and deploy drone-based surveillance systems. Rooftop monitoring at check posts will also be introduced to improve oversight. The chief minister directed authorities to urgently procure advanced anti-drone technology and strictly enforce regulations governing drone operations, with ongoing search and combing operations against criminal and terrorist elements continuing without pause.

Modern Training and Public Order Initiatives

The meeting further reviewed the preparedness of the RMP Anti-Riots Force, focusing on modern training methods and updated security equipment to improve crowd control capabilities. Special security standard operating procedures for Youm-e-Hazrat Ali (AS) will be developed in consultation with religious scholars to ensure peaceful observance. Maryam Nawaz commended Provincial Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and the Lahore Police for their prompt and effective management of recent security situations, and she expressed appreciation for the constructive role played by religious scholars in maintaining public order.

Addressing Evolving Security Threats

Highlighting the evolving nature of security threats, the chief minister warned that modern warfare tactics require adaptive strategies. She described it as deeply concerning that a suicide bomber was able to pass through a checkpoint into Punjab, stressing that negligence is not an option. Reaffirming her stance, she emphasized that eradicating terrorism demands collective, coordinated, and proactive action from all segments of society.
