Punjab Minister Orders Crackdown on Transport Overcharging After Fuel Price Hike

In response to the recent increase in petroleum prices, Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Minister Bilal Akbar Khan has issued a directive for strict action against transporters found overcharging passengers. This move aims to protect commuters from exploitation and ensure fare transparency across the province.

Immediate Measures and Monitoring Efforts

According to an official handout released on Saturday, Minister Khan has instructed relevant authorities to remain active in the field to closely monitor transport fares. He emphasized the need for revised fare lists that align with the latest petroleum product prices, ensuring that any fare adjustments are justified and clear for all passengers.

To bolster these efforts, special monitoring teams have been constituted, and all Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) have been directed to take immediate practical steps regarding fare enforcement. These RTAs are required to submit compliance reports to demonstrate their adherence to the new regulations.

Strict Legal Action Against Violators

Minister Bilal Akbar Khan issued a stern warning that transporters charging fares higher than the officially notified rates will face strict legal action. He clarified that only a justified increase in fares, directly in line with the rise in petroleum prices, will be permitted. This policy is designed to prevent arbitrary overcharging and maintain fairness in the transport sector.

The minister reiterated that any transporters found violating the notified fare lists will be subject to rigorous penalties, underscoring the government's commitment to passenger welfare and regulatory compliance.
