Punjab Ramazan Relief: 4.5M Benefit from Nigehban Cards

In a significant development for Ramazan relief efforts, Special Assistant to the Punjab Chief Minister for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Salma Butt, revealed on Friday that an impressive 4.5 million households across the province are now benefiting from the Ramazan Nigehban Cards. This initiative is designed to offer comprehensive support during the holy month, providing not only cash assistance but also enabling families to purchase essential items directly.

On-Site Review in Muzaffargarh

Ms. Butt made this announcement during a visit to Muzaffargarh, where she chaired a high-level meeting to review arrangements for Ramazan and price control measures. Emphasizing the government's commitment, she stated that under the Nighaban Ramazan Package, deserving families are receiving a dual benefit of essential supplies and financial aid. Specifically, she highlighted that approximately 150,000 deserving households in Muzaffargarh alone are being supported through this program.

Ensuring Public Benefits

To ensure the public is reaping the intended benefits, Ms. Butt personally visited a Ramazan Sahulat Bazaar in the district. She expressed satisfaction with the overall arrangements made to facilitate people, noting that the efforts are aligned with the Punjab government's goal of providing maximum relief. Her visit underscored the administration's focus on making essential goods accessible and affordable throughout the month.

Strict Enforcement of Price Controls

During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Usman Tahir Jappa provided a detailed update on enforcement actions. He reported that a total of 25,908 inspections have been conducted in Muzaffargarh district to curb malpractices. As a result of these efforts, 424 overcharging cases were identified, leading to 71 arrests and the imposition of fines amounting to Rs 951,000. Additionally, three cases were formally registered, and fifteen business points were sealed for violations.

Daily Monitoring and Price Stability

To prevent hoarding and price hikes, DC Jappa informed that 39 price control magistrates are actively conducting daily field monitoring. He assured that the prices of essential items in the district are not only lower than the general market rates but also below the prices officially notified by the district government. This rigorous oversight aims to maintain stability and protect consumers during Ramazan.

Additional Relief Measures

Beyond the Nigehban Cards, the Deputy Commissioner also detailed other initiatives, including the establishment of Ramazan Dastarkhwans in the district to provide free meals to those in need. Ms. Butt reiterated the Punjab government's unwavering commitment to these relief efforts, emphasizing that ensuring public welfare remains a top priority.

In a related note, it was mentioned that the first-ever green property certificate has been issued to enhance land record transparency, though further details were not elaborated in this context. Additionally, reports indicate that 206 cases were reported at the Women Protection Centre over the past eight months, highlighting ongoing social issues in the region.
