Massive Security Deployment in Lahore
Lahore Police implemented extensive security arrangements on the seventh day of Muharram-ul-Haram, deploying more than 6,000 officers and personnel to ensure the safety of mourning processions and majalis across the city. According to DIG Operations Faisal Kamran, 98 mourning processions were taken out from different parts of Lahore, while 435 majalis for men and women were organized.
Under the security plan, six divisional SPs, 12 DSPs and 30 SHOs were deployed at key locations to supervise security arrangements and maintain law and order. The DIG Operations said that 77 female police personnel performed duties to facilitate the checking of women and strengthen the security cordon around processions and majalis.
Snipers and Patrolling Teams
Snipers were deployed on the rooftops of high-rise buildings along sensitive routes, while police patrolling teams remained active throughout the city. He had also directed officers to seek assistance from female volunteers during the screening of women to ensure effective security management.
Meanwhile, Punjab Police ensured stringent security arrangements across the province on the seventh day of Muharram-ul-Haram, with around 60,000 officers and personnel performing security duties for mourning processions and religious gatherings.
Province-Wide Statistics
According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, a total of 1,377 mourning processions and 3,869 majalis were held across Punjab, including 98 processions and 435 majalis in Lahore. More than 27,000 community volunteers assisted law enforcement agencies in maintaining security arrangements.
Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem said that security remained on high alert throughout the Ashra of Muharram-ul-Haram and that all available resources were utilized to maintain law and order across the province.
Strict Enforcement of Laws
He said strict implementation of Section 144 imposed by the Punjab government was ensured. The IGP stated that aerial firing, display of weapons, dissemination of hate material and other provocative activities remained strictly prohibited during Muharram. No processions or gatherings were allowed except on designated routes and approved venues.
He added that Muharram-related activities were continuously monitored through the Safe Cities Authority’s surveillance system and district administration networks. Personnel from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU) and other field formations were deployed to perform security duties.
Control Rooms and Monitoring
Abdul Kareem further said that control rooms established in all districts remained linked with the Central Police Office’s central control room to ensure effective monitoring of security arrangements and prompt response to any emerging situation. He also directed strict enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act and legal action against elements involved in spreading hate material, particularly through social media platforms.
