PPP, JUI-F Review Alliance, Two Leaders Join IPP in AJK

The political landscape of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) witnessed dramatic developments as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazl) began reviewing their electoral alliance, while two influential politicians from Kotli abandoned the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) and PPP to join the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) ahead of the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections.

PPP and JUI-F Revisit Seat Adjustment Agreement

Highly placed political sources said the PPP and JUI-F leaderships are engaged in intensive consultations to revisit their seat adjustment agreement amid changing political calculations. The discussions are aimed at reshaping the electoral understanding in constituencies where both parties believe a revised strategy could improve their chances of success.

According to sources, the PPP has now expressed its desire to reclaim the strategically important Dheerkot constituency and field its own candidate instead of leaving the seat to its ally under the earlier arrangement. The party is prepared to continue its electoral cooperation with the JUI-F only in the Palandri constituency, effectively narrowing the scope of the alliance.

Potential Impact on Electoral Equations

Political observers believe that if the revised formula is approved by the leadership of both parties, it could significantly alter the electoral equations across several constituencies in AJK, forcing rival parties to reassess their campaign strategies and candidate positioning. Sources maintained that negotiations remain ongoing and no final decision has yet been announced. Any revised agreement, they said, will only be made public after the leadership of both parties reaches a mutually acceptable consensus.

IPP Gains Two High-Profile Defectors in Kotli

The alliance discussions unfolded alongside another major political development in Kotli district, where the IPP scored two high-profile political gains by inducting former PML-N leader Malik Zulfiqar Ali and former PPP leader Malik Muhammad Yusuf into its ranks. The first blow came to the PML-N in the Raj Mahal constituency after Malik Zulfiqar Ali formally quit the party following a dispute over ticket allocation.

Sources said Malik Zulfiqar, who had contested the previous election as the PML-N candidate, sought the party nomination once again but was overlooked after the party awarded the ticket to veteran politician Malik Muhammad Nawaz, a seven-time election winner who recently joined the PML-N from the Muslim Conference. Despite repeated appeals to the party leadership for a review of the decision, Malik Zulfiqar failed to secure the nomination.

Defections Complicate Electoral Contests

He subsequently met IPP President Abdul Aleem Khan in Islamabad, formally joined the party, and was immediately awarded the IPP ticket for the Raj Mahal constituency. Political analysts believe the move could substantially complicate the electoral contest in the constituency by dividing traditional vote banks and creating a competitive three-way race.

The PPP also suffered a setback after Malik Muhammad Yusuf announced his departure from the party over differences regarding ticket distribution. Malik Yusuf had mounted a strong challenge against PPP Azad Kashmir President Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin in the previous election before later joining the PPP. According to political sources, he had been assured that he would receive the party ticket from Raj Mahal in the next election while Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin would continue to contest from Kotli city.

Shift in Political Equations

However, the political equation shifted after former Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) legislator Malik Zafar joined the PPP. The party leadership subsequently nominated Malik Zafar for Raj Mahal, prompting Malik Yusuf to express strong reservations before resigning from the party. Following his meeting with Abdul Aleem Khan, Malik Yusuf formally joined the IPP and was awarded the party ticket for the Kotli city constituency, setting up another electoral showdown with Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin.

Political circles view the twin defections as a significant boost for the IPP, which is seeking to expand its footprint in AJK. Analysts believe the developments have not only dented the electoral prospects of the PML-N and PPP in Kotli district but have also positioned the IPP as an increasingly influential player capable of reshaping political contests in several constituencies.

IPP Leadership Welcomes New Members

According to an IPP statement, Abdul Aleem Khan welcomed both leaders into the party and expressed confidence that their political experience and public support would strengthen the party's campaign in AJK. The joining ceremony was attended by several senior political figures, including Malik Muhammad Ilyas, Chaudhry Amir Qabil, Malik Nizam Iqbal Minhas, Malik Muhammad Mushtaq, Malik Sarmad Ali, Chaudhry Muhammad Ashraf, Advocate Majid Malik, Malik Khalid Mahmood, and former Teachers Organisation president Hafiz Kazim Malik.
