A police constable was shot dead and two traffic police officials were injured in separate attacks in Lower Dir on Thursday, prompting heightened security measures and search operations across the district.
Attack at Badwan Bridge Check-Post
According to police sources, the first incident occurred at a police check-post on Badwan Bridge in Tehsil Adenzai, where unidentified assailants launched a sudden attack and opened fire on security personnel. During the exchange of fire, Constable Muhammad Ismail, a resident of Badwan, was killed while performing his duty.
Police officials said security personnel returned fire and engaged the attackers for nearly an hour before the assailants fled the area. A heavy police contingent was dispatched to the scene, and a search operation was launched in surrounding localities to trace those responsible for the attack.
Funeral and Tribute
The funeral prayer for the slain constable was later offered at Police Lines Balambat. It was attended by District Police Officer (DPO) Lower Dir Furqan Bilal, Deputy Commissioner Basharat Ahmad, senior police and civil administration officials, as well as a large number of local residents. A police contingent presented a guard of honour, while officials laid floral wreaths on the coffin and paid tribute to the fallen officer’s service and sacrifice.
Speaking on the occasion, DPO Furqan Bilal said the sacrifices rendered by police personnel in defence of the country would always be remembered with honour and respect.
Attack on Traffic Wardens
In a separate incident, two traffic police officials came under attack near the Bajaur Bypass at Ghanam Shah Munda within the jurisdiction of Munda Police Station. Police said traffic wardens Sajjad Khan and Syed Midraruddin were on duty when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them before escaping from the scene.
The injured officials were initially taken to Munda Hospital before being shifted to the District Headquarters Teaching Hospital in Timergara for further treatment. Hospital sources said both officers were out of danger and responding positively to treatment.
Police have launched investigations into both incidents and intensified efforts to arrest those involved. Security has also been tightened across the district following the attacks.
