PTI Demands Formal Govt Committee for Talks After Repeated Invitations
PTI Demands Formal Govt Committee for Talks After Invitations

PTI Seeks Concrete Steps From Government for Dialogue

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has demanded that the government formally announce its members of the dialogue committee as soon as possible, following two formal invitations extended by the treasury benches for direct talks. Senior PTI parliamentarian Riaz Fatyana stated that if the government wants a meaningful dialogue with the main opposition party, it should immediately name its representative for the negotiations.

Fatyana, a PTI MNA from Kamalia, told this newspaper that PTI will announce its committee members immediately after the government's announcement. He emphasized that meaningful dialogue requires practical steps, not just verbal offers from the parliament's platform, expressing doubts that the invitations are only for public consumption without serious intent to resolve longstanding issues.

Venue and Previous Failed Attempts

Fatyana suggested that the talks should be held in the parliament, specifically in the committee room or the Speaker's chamber, to facilitate thorough discussion and consensus. He urged that the matter should not be delayed further. The government and opposition have previously failed to resolve political issues in a committee chaired by PPP senior leader Syed Khursheed Shah, which met only twice due to disagreements.

According to Fatyana, previous talks remained inconclusive due to the government's non-serious initiative. However, a senior member from the treasury benches countered that the opposition came up with unrealistic demands, including the immediate release of their leader who is imprisoned on court orders, which should be respected.

Budget Session Overshadowed by Political Discourse

Although the budget session is typically focused on budgetary proposals, the debate on the federal budget 2026-27 was dominated by political discussions. In a rare gesture of conciliation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally invited PTI for direct talks, raising hopes of easing the country's tense political climate. Defence Minister Khwaja Muhammad Asif repeated the invitation, urging PTI to sign the Charter of Democracy.

During a National Assembly session, Prime Minister Shehbaz personally approached PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Asad Qaiser, and opposition leader Mehmood Achakzai, initiating a brief but meaningful conversation, including a handshake. Political and constitutional experts believe that meaningful dialogue will take time, as practical steps are still not visible.
