HARIPUR: The City Station House Officer (SHO) and other police officials, who had been suspended for baton charging protesters from the transgender community, were reinstated after reconciliation between the two parties.
Reinstatement Order
According to an order issued by the Haripur District Police Officer (DPO), the ongoing departmental action against the suspended police officers and officials has been terminated following a reconciliation between the transgender community and the concerned police officials. Under the order, City SHO Haroon Khan, PASI Noman Arshad, Constable Asim, Constable Faheem Shahzad, Constable Sajjad, and Constable Muhammad Zubair have been reinstated to their duties.
Social Media Reaction
The incident has been met with amazement by social media users, who termed it 'a mockery of the law'. Many expressed disbelief at the swift reversal of disciplinary action, questioning the effectiveness of accountability mechanisms within the police force.
Background of the Incident
The transgender community had previously blocked the motorway to protest against restrictions that limited their right to earn a livelihood. However, when they did not follow police orders to remove the road blockade, police baton charged them, injuring several transgender persons and subsequently locking them up. The police officials involved had been suspended for the use of excessive violence during the incident.
The reconciliation has raised concerns about the message it sends regarding police accountability and the protection of marginalized communities' rights. Critics argue that such actions undermine the rule of law and encourage impunity among law enforcement personnel.
