Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has nominated PPP Gilgit-Baltistan President Advocate Amjad as the Chief Minister of the region, according to a post shared by the party on X. The decision was conveyed during a telephonic conversation between Bilawal and Amjad.
Government Formation Details
According to the PPP post, Bilawal also issued instructions regarding government formation and the implementation of citizens’ constitutional and economic rights. The PPP announced on Saturday that it and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had reached an agreement to form the next government in Gilgit-Baltistan together.
Under the agreement, the PPP will hold the position of chief minister, while the PML-N will get the posts of governor, opposition leader, and deputy speaker of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
Electoral Landscape
The PPP emerged as the largest party in the 24-member assembly, securing a majority of seats. The PML-N followed with six seats. The Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) became the third-largest parliamentary group after four independent candidates elected on different constituencies joined its ranks.
At the national level, the post-election situation prompted political coordination between parties. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the PPP on its leading position in Gilgit-Baltistan and indicated that the PML-N would sit in the opposition while supporting the PPP in forming the government.
Democratic Continuation
Bilawal welcomed the development, describing it as a continuation of democratic norms and expressing gratitude for the cooperation. He said his party would focus on addressing governance challenges and public concerns in the region.
