The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) regional assembly elected Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Amjad Hussain as the new chief minister on Monday, as reported by Pakistani state media. The election took place shortly after newly elected assembly members took their oaths of office. Hussain, who also serves as the regional president of the PPP, was elected unopposed after no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the post.
Hussain’s Vision for Gilgit-Baltistan
Addressing the assembly, Hussain thanked his party for nominating him and emphasized that resolving the region’s issues would be his top priority. “Gilgit-Baltistan is the richest region in the world in terms of resources, and these resources will be utilized for human development,” he said, as quoted by Pakistan state television. He further stated, “Comprehensive measures will be taken under a strategy to eradicate unemployment from this region.”
Strategic and Economic Significance of Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan is a semi-autonomous region in northern Pakistan, bordering China, Afghanistan, and Indian-administered Kashmir. It is home to some of the world’s tallest peaks, including parts of the Karakoram mountain range, and is a critical area for tourism, water resources, and strategic connectivity. Despite its wealth of natural resources, the region faces economic challenges due to its remote location, limited industrial development, inadequate infrastructure, and restricted access to markets and investment opportunities. The local economy relies primarily on agriculture, livestock, tourism, and small-scale trade.
Election Results and Assembly Composition
The GB election commission released the final results of the June 7 general election on Friday. The PPP secured nine seats, followed by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with six seats and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) with four seats. After the notification of reserved seats, the PPP’s strength in the 33-member assembly increased to 13 seats, the PML-N to nine seats, and the IPP to six seats.
Disputed Status of Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan lies in the Himalayan region of Kashmir, which is disputed between India and Pakistan. India has consistently claimed the right to govern all territories in the Jammu and Kashmir region, while Pakistan rejects these claims and accuses India of forcefully occupying the region since 1947. Pakistan also lays claim to all parts of Kashmir administered by India since both countries gained independence from Britain in 1947.
