Punjab Assembly Approves Significant Reductions in Traffic Fines
The Punjab Assembly has passed a series of amendments aimed at lowering traffic fines across the province, providing substantial relief to motorists. The revised legislation, known as the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Fourth Amendment) Ordinance 2025, was approved by a majority vote after being cleared earlier by the relevant standing committee. Once it receives final approval from the Governor of Punjab, the new law will take effect, marking a key change in traffic enforcement policies.
Detailed Breakdown of Fine Reductions
Under the new framework, fines for motorcycles have been significantly reduced. Some penalties for minor violations have been cut from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000, while the maximum fine for motorcycles is now capped at Rs2,000. For rickshaws, certain fines have been lowered from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000, with more serious violations now carrying a penalty of Rs2,000.
Motorists driving cars and jeeps will also benefit from these changes. Fines for minor offences have been reduced from Rs5,000 to Rs2,000, although penalties for serious violations remain unchanged at Rs5,000. It is important to note that the amendments retain existing fines for overspeeding across all vehicle categories, ensuring that safety measures are not compromised.
Adjustments for High-End and Transport Vehicles
For high-end vehicles with an engine capacity above 2000cc, fines have been reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000, with a minimum penalty set at Rs2,000. Similarly, fines for transport vehicles such as Mazda trucks, coasters, and light passenger vans have been lowered from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000. Maximum penalties for heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks, have also been reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000, offering relief to commercial operators.
This legislative move is expected to ease the financial burden on drivers while maintaining road safety standards. The amendments reflect a balanced approach to traffic management in Punjab.
