The District Council Sukkur on Thursday unanimously approved the budget for the financial year 2026-27 during a session presided over by Chairman Syed Kumail Haider Shah. According to official figures, the total budget stands at Rs5.39 billion, while estimated expenditures are Rs5.60 billion, showing a deficit of Rs204.3 million.

Tourism and Infrastructure Development

Addressing the session, Chairman Syed Kumail Haider Shah said that on the directives of the Chief Minister of Sindh, Rs1 billion has been allocated for the promotion of tourism. “Modern resorts will be constructed along the banks of the River Indus to boost tourism in the region,” he announced. This initiative aims to attract both domestic and international visitors, leveraging the scenic potential of the Indus River.

Welfare and Public Services

Highlighting the council’s welfare initiatives, Shah said an air ambulance service, ferry service, Ho Jamalo Train, free Wi-Fi, digital gates, city beautification, and improved educational facilities have been provided with the support of all elected representatives. “An effort was made that no department or institution working for human welfare should be left without the District Council’s support,” Shah added. Financial assistance was extended to Children Hospital, NICVD, Civil Hospital, and other welfare institutions. Civil Hospital was also equipped with solarization and improved emergency facilities.

Health and Emergency Services

Shah noted that the need for an air ambulance was felt after the incident involving Shaheed Jan Muhammad Mahar, and the service is now operational under the District Council. This service is expected to provide critical medical evacuation for emergencies, especially in remote areas.

Clean Water and Education Initiatives

Other key initiatives include the completion of a clean drinking water scheme in Rohri, with plans to extend it to Sukkur city soon. In collaboration with IBA Sukkur, a CSS preparation program is underway. So far, five youth have cleared the CSS exam and been appointed as officers in different departments. The council has also launched the BB Asifa Bhutto SCA Scholarship Program. “We hope a daughter from Sukkur will clear the SCA exam under this program and bring pride to the district,” the chairman said.

Women Empowerment and Additional Schemes

Shah further said women-focused programs including a scooter scheme, EV buses, employment opportunities, and other welfare projects are in progress. He said that on his request, the Chief Minister Sindh approved additional schemes worth over Rs2.5 billion for Sukkur, including substantial funds for town committees. The special supplementary fund includes 30 projects for 4 Town Committees, 4 Municipal Committees, and 11 Union Committees.

Other Activities and Budget Approval

Shah also informed the house that five members of the District Council were selected through a lucky draw for the holy Umrah. Calling the budget people-friendly, progressive, and welfare-oriented, the council approved it by majority vote. Mr. Shah said more sessions will be held, but this was the final budget session.
