Shangla - Three people, including two women, sustained critical injuries after a vehicle carrying passengers from Kohistan plunged into a deep ravine on the Shangla Alpurai Road, rescue and hospital sources said on Tuesday. According to initial reports, the accident occurred when the victims, residents of Kohistan, were travelling in a motorcar through the mountainous Shangla region. While negotiating a stretch of the road, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the roadway and fall into a deep gorge.
As a result of the crash, all three occupants of the vehicle suffered serious injuries. The vehicle was extensively damaged after tumbling down the steep ravine. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after learning of the incident and launched rescue efforts. Rescue personnel also arrived shortly afterward and, with the assistance of local volunteers, managed to retrieve the injured passengers from the difficult terrain. The injured individuals were provided first aid at the scene before being shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Alpurai for emergency medical treatment.
Hospital sources said the victims had sustained multiple serious injuries and their condition was described as critical. Due to the severity of their injuries and the need for advanced medical care, doctors referred all three patients to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital in Swat for specialized treatment. Medical officials stated that the injured were under close observation and receiving intensive care. The identities of the victims were not immediately released.
The accident once again highlights the dangers associated with travel on the mountainous roads of Shangla and adjoining districts. The region’s roads, characterized by steep slopes, sharp bends and deep ravines, often pose significant challenges for motorists, particularly during adverse weather conditions or in cases of speeding and driver negligence.
Local authorities have urged drivers to exercise extreme caution while navigating these treacherous routes. The incident has also sparked calls for improved road safety measures and better infrastructure in the area to prevent such tragedies in the future. Meanwhile, the injured continue to receive medical attention, and their families have been notified. The community remains in shock over the harrowing accident, which could have resulted in even greater loss of life had it not been for the swift response of rescuers and locals.
