Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced that more than 30,000 kilometres of roads have been constructed, repaired or rehabilitated across the province under an ambitious programme aimed at modernising Punjab’s transport and road infrastructure. The chief minister said work under the “CM Local Roads Programme” was progressing rapidly in various districts and directed authorities to ensure strict adherence to timelines, quality standards and transparency in all road construction, repair and rehabilitation projects.
Historic Infrastructure Initiative
Describing the initiative as a historic effort to upgrade infrastructure across Punjab, Maryam Nawaz said the government had launched multi-billion-rupee development projects to improve connectivity and facilitate safer and smoother travel for citizens. She also declared compliance with lane and line discipline mandatory in Lahore and other major cities and directed authorities to ensure effective implementation of traffic regulations.
Approved Projects for Major Cities
The chief minister noted that multi-billion-rupee transport infrastructure and bus stop projects had already been approved for Faisalabad, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi and Multan. Under her directions, work is also under way on mass transit projects in Faisalabad and Gujranwala to provide modern and efficient public transport facilities. She further ordered the introduction of a modern traffic management system in Lahore and other major urban centres of the province.
Sustainable and Energy-Efficient Measures
Maryam Nawaz also made the installation of solar-powered streetlights mandatory on all newly constructed roads as part of efforts to promote energy-efficient and sustainable infrastructure. She added that the restoration of major highways in Murree had been completed under the “Restoration of Roads” programme, improving travel facilities for both tourists and local residents.
