Carlo Ancelotti expressed optimism that Neymar could feature for more than 15 minutes in Brazil's World Cup round of 32 match against Japan on Monday in Houston. The Brazil coach confirmed the forward's calf injury has improved significantly over the past week.
Neymar's Fitness Progress
Neymar managed just over 15 minutes in Brazil's 3-0 victory over Scotland in their previous match. Ancelotti stated, "In the last week his progress has been significant. Unfortunately he could not play longer than 15 minutes before, but he is now doing well enough to play more." The team is preparing for a tough knockout fixture, with Ancelotti emphasizing the need for a strong mindset and readiness for extra time or penalties.
Japan Threat and Tactical Preparation
Japan defeated Brazil 3-2 in a friendly in Tokyo in October. Ancelotti noted that match provided valuable insight into Japan's quality. "It was a good experience to know that Japan are one of the best teams in the world," he said. "We have full respect for them and will prepare for the game like it is a final, because to us it is a final." The game kicks off at noon Houston time, a first for Brazil in the tournament, but Ancelotti is unconcerned, noting the team trains at that time daily.
No Clear Favorite for World Cup
Ancelotti believes no team has emerged as a clear favorite to win the tournament. "It might be that some teams did better than others in the group stage, but I don't think a clear favourite has come up yet. This should be a very hard-fought and balanced tournament," he said.
Moriyasu to Decide Penalty Takers
Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu announced he will decide the penalty shootout order if the match goes to spot kicks, rather than letting players volunteer. Japan lost to Croatia in the 2022 World Cup last 16 after three players missed penalties. "This time when the moment comes for the penalty kick shootout is probable I would like to decide the order of the kickers rather than players volunteering like last time," Moriyasu said. "I think I am going to make the decision and decide who is going to kick." Japan's squad aims for a first-ever final, with notable wins over Germany, Spain, and England in recent years. However, winger Takefusa Kubo will miss the match due to an injury sustained in the group stage.
