Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has expressed confidence ahead of his second tenure as the national red-ball skipper, saying he returns to the role with greater maturity, valuable leadership experience and a renewed focus on discipline, fitness and performance.
Babar Azam on Leadership Lessons
Speaking in an interview on Straight Drive with Salman Butt, Babar described captaining Pakistan as a privilege and said lessons from his previous spell in charge had helped him develop a clearer mindset and stronger leadership approach. Reflecting on his earlier captaincy, Babar acknowledged that every leader learns from both successes and mistakes. He said self-evaluation had enabled him to grow, adding that he now approaches the role with better planning, confidence and a positive outlook.
Supporting Emerging Talent
The Pakistan captain also emphasized the importance of supporting the team's emerging talent, noting that the current Test squad includes several standout performers from domestic cricket. He said creating a relaxed environment and standing by young players during difficult moments would remain one of his key responsibilities.
Three Pillars: Discipline, Fitness, Performance
Babar identified discipline, fitness and performance as the three pillars of his leadership philosophy, stressing that while he would always support his teammates, there would be no compromise on these standards. Discussing the recently concluded National Cricket Academy (NCA) Red-Ball Camp, Babar said it played a vital role in preparing the squad for the physical and mental demands of Test cricket. He explained that the camp focused on improving fitness, fielding and mental resilience to help players cope better with the challenges of long-format matches.
Preparations for West Indies and England Tours
He added that the coaching staff worked extensively on helping players manage pressure, recover from setbacks and respond effectively during difficult match situations. Looking ahead to Pakistan's upcoming Test tours of the West Indies and England, Babar expressed confidence in the team's preparations. He said the training camp had been designed to simulate overseas conditions, while several players' county cricket experience would prove valuable during the England tour.
Batting Philosophy and Advice
On his batting, Babar said his approach has always been guided by the team's requirements rather than personal milestones, adding that he is prepared to adapt his style according to match situations. He also welcomed constructive criticism, saying it helps players improve, while advising aspiring cricketers to remain patient, trust the process and continue working hard to achieve success.
