Backrooms is on course to become the highest-grossing film in A24's history, less than two weeks after its theatrical release. The horror film, directed by Kane Parsons and based on the viral online phenomenon, is expected to surpass the worldwide box office total of Marty Supreme, which previously held the record for the studio with $191.2 million globally.
Record-Breaking Projections
According to reported projections, Backrooms is expected to finish the weekend with a worldwide total exceeding $185 million, placing it within reach of the record. Industry estimates suggest the film could overtake Marty Supreme by the end of the weekend or early next week. The film continues to attract audiences despite a significant second-weekend decline in North America.
Domestic and International Performance
Backrooms is projected to earn $25.7 million during its second frame, representing a reported 68% drop from its opening weekend. Its domestic total is expected to reach $134.8 million by the end of the weekend. Internationally, the film had accumulated $50.3 million as of Friday, helping push its global earnings towards the record-setting milestone.
Historic Achievement
Backrooms reached the studio's highest domestic box office total within six days of release, surpassing the domestic earnings of Marty Supreme, which had previously generated $96 million in North America. The record-breaking performance is particularly notable given the film's reported production budget of under $10 million.
Production and Cast
The project was co-financed with Chernin Entertainment and supported by a domestic marketing campaign reportedly budgeted in the tens of millions. Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve and was produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, 21 Laps and Phobos alongside A24.
