NEW JERSEY - Canada remain uncertain over the fitness of star defender Alphonso Davies ahead of Thursday's pivotal FIFA World Cup Group B encounter against Qatar in Vancouver. The Bayern Munich full-back took part in Tuesday's training session at the National Soccer Development Centre, raising hopes of a return to action. However, Canadian officials declined to provide a definitive update on his condition, maintaining secrecy over whether the 25-year-old will be available for selection.
Davies was involved in the media-accessible portion of training as he continues a structured return-to-play programme. Canada's medical staff are closely monitoring his progress following a difficult spell on the sidelines.
Davies' Injury History
One of Canada's most influential players, Davies has not featured for the national team since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the CONCACAF Nations League Finals in March 2025. Since returning to club action, he has also struggled with recurring hamstring issues.
Despite the setbacks, Davies remains a key figure for the Canadians. Since making his international debut at the age of 16 in 2017, he has earned 58 caps and scored 15 goals, including Canada's first-ever World Cup goal at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Mental Toll and Determination
Ahead of the competition, Davies admitted the injuries had taken a mental toll but said they had strengthened his determination to return to top form.
Canada opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Qatar also earned a point in their opener against Switzerland.
