Curran ready to fill England gap left by Stokes exit ahead of Pakistan Test
Curran ready to fill Stokes gap for England vs Pakistan

Sam Curran has declared himself ready to step into the substantial void left by Ben Stokes's abrupt international retirement, as England prepare for their next Test assignment against Pakistan in August. The 28-year-old Surrey all-rounder, who last played a Test for England five years ago, believes he can fill the dual role of fast-bowling all-rounder that Stokes had made his own.

Stokes's Shock Retirement Creates Selection Headache

Stokes stunned the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from international cricket on the fourth day of the Trent Bridge Test against New Zealand, a match England went on to lose heavily, resulting in a 2-1 series defeat. His departure has left the team management with difficult decisions, particularly regarding the captaincy and the balance of the side. While Harry Brook and Joe Root are the frontrunners for the red-ball captaincy, finding a like-for-like replacement for Stokes's all-round capabilities has proved more challenging.

Curran's Test Pedigree and Recent Form

Curran, who has 24 Test caps to his name, has taken 47 wickets at an average of 35.51 and scored 666 runs at 24.69. His finest hour came in 2018 when, at just 20 years old, he was named player of the series against India for his dynamic performances. Currently involved in the T20 series against India, which continues at Old Trafford on Saturday, Curran is realistic about the challenge but embraces the opportunity.

“Stokesy’s going to be a big gap to fill for whoever takes that role but, yeah, I love playing for England,” Curran told reporters on Friday. “There’s obviously going to be a lot of noise on whoever takes that spot. I don’t want to put pressure on myself, (but) I’m a competitive person — whatever challenge is thrown at me, I’ll try my best. So whatever format that is, I’ll do my best whenever I can.”

One-Day International Squad Named

Curran has also been included in a 16-man squad for the upcoming one-day international series against India, which is drawn largely from the current T20 group. Joe Root returns to the ODI setup, while Phil Salt, Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and Luke Wood have been omitted. Uncapped James Coles, a spin-bowling all-rounder who could also be a candidate to replace Stokes in the Test side, has been retained, signaling the selectors' confidence in the 22-year-old.

The three-match ODI series begins at Edgbaston on July 14, followed by fixtures at Cardiff's Sophia Gardens and Lord's. Meanwhile, England have made two changes to the T20 side for the upcoming match, with Jofra Archer and debutant Josh Tongue replacing Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood.

Focus on the Present, Eye on the Future

Curran, the son of the late Zimbabwe all-rounder Kevin Curran, is taking a pragmatic approach. “We’ve got a big series here, so I’m focused on that and then we’ll see what happens later on. I’m feeling good. It’s a long summer ahead,” he said. The left-arm swing bowler's ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a natural candidate to fill the Stokes-shaped hole, but he is not getting ahead of himself.

The Test against Pakistan at Headingley in August will be England's first without Stokes, and how they replace his all-round prowess will be a key subplot. Curran's experience and proven track record at the highest level could make him the solution England are looking for.
