Wimbledon, England – French Open champion Coco Gauff displayed remarkable composure under pressure to overcome a spirited challenge from Argentina’s Solana Sierra, while world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and top seed Aryna Sabalenka continued their impressive Wimbledon campaigns by advancing to the third round on Wednesday.
Gauff’s Dramatic Escape
Gauff appeared destined for a shock exit after falling a break behind in the deciding set and trailing 5-4 as Sierra served for the match. However, the American rediscovered her fighting spirit, breaking back before producing a flawless finish in the decisive tiebreak. Trailing 7-4, she reeled off six consecutive points, sealing a dramatic 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) victory with a powerful ace.
The 21-year-old, whose Wimbledon breakthrough came as a teenager in 2019, credited her resilience and confidence in her return game for turning the contest around at the crucial stage. According to Gauff, she never lost belief even when facing match point.
Sinner and Sabalenka Cruise
Defending men’s champion Sinner enjoyed a far less dramatic afternoon, overcoming Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Although the Italian had to recover from a second-set deficit, his superior consistency proved decisive as he secured victory in straight sets to continue his title defence.
Sabalenka also maintained her quest for a maiden Wimbledon crown, defeating American McCartney Kessler 6-1, 7-6 (11-9). The Belarusian saved two set points in a tense second-set tiebreak before converting her third match point to seal an impressive win.
Osaka Advances
Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka also progressed with a commanding straight-sets victory over Anastasia Gasanova, adding another convincing performance to a memorable day featuring several of the tournament’s biggest stars at the All England Club.
