Disney and Lucasfilm's Mandalorian and Grogu has exited the domestic box office top five after suffering a 61% decline in its third weekend in theaters. According to industry projections, the Star Wars film is expected to earn approximately $9.5 million during its third weekend, placing it in sixth position at the North American box office. This result would bring its domestic total to around $155.3 million.
Box Office Performance
Directed by Jon Favreau, Mandalorian and Grogu continues the storyline from the Disney+ television series. The film stars Pedro Pascal as Din Djarin, alongside Sigourney Weaver as new character Colonel Ward. The movie faced challenges from its Memorial Day opening weekend, debuting with $98 million domestically over the four-day holiday period. This figure fell short of the $103 million earned by Solo: A Star Wars Story during the same holiday frame in 2018.
In its second weekend, the film experienced a 69% decline in ticket sales before posting another significant drop in its third frame. The production budget for the film was $165 million, with global marketing costs estimated at over $100 million.
Competition from Independent Films
Meanwhile, independent releases continued to perform strongly. A24's Backrooms is projected to earn $25.7 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $134.8 million. Focus Features' Obsession is expected to add $24.8 million, increasing its domestic earnings to over $151 million. Another challenger came from The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act, distributed by Fathom Events, which is projected to debut with $22.1 million from 2,221 cinemas.
The box office landscape remains competitive as Mandalorian and Grogu struggles to maintain its initial momentum.
