The three-day Shandur Polo Festival has officially commenced in northern Pakistan, bringing together polo enthusiasts, tourists, and local communities at the renowned Shandur Pass, widely regarded as the world's highest polo ground. The opening ceremony was attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, who served as the chief guest and reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to promoting tourism and cultural activities in the region.

The annual festival has drawn visitors from across Pakistan as well as international tourists, highlighting the growing global appeal of the traditional mountain sport and the scenic beauty of the country's northern areas. Polo teams representing Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan faced off in the opening matches, delivering thrilling performances and showcasing the fast-paced style of freestyle polo for which the festival is famous.
Officials' Remarks on Tourism and Cultural Heritage
Officials said the event serves as a platform to promote tourism, preserve cultural heritage, and encourage sporting activities in Pakistan's mountainous regions. The festival also features cultural performances, local traditions, and community engagement activities alongside the polo competitions.
Governor Kundi's Vision for Infrastructure Development
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi said efforts are being made to enhance tourism infrastructure in collaboration with the federal government and the National Highway Authority (NHA). He noted that improvements to road networks and visitor facilities would help attract more domestic and international tourists to the region.
The Shandur Polo Festival is considered one of Pakistan's most iconic cultural and sporting events, celebrating the centuries-old rivalry and friendship between teams from Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan while showcasing the natural beauty of the northern highlands.
