Islamabad-Rawalpindi Traffic Chaos Amid Cricket Security
Traffic Gridlock in Twin Cities Due to Cricket Security

Major Traffic Gridlock Hits Twin Cities

Commuters in Islamabad and Rawalpindi are experiencing severe traffic disruptions as extensive security arrangements for the ongoing Pakistan-Sri Lanka cricket series and upcoming tri-nation tournament create chaos on the roads. The situation has become particularly challenging during the movement of the Sri Lankan cricket team between their hotel and the stadium.

Security Measures Intensify After Recent Bombing

The security protocol was significantly enhanced following the November 12 suicide bombing in Islamabad's Sector G-11, prompting Pakistan Army and paramilitary forces to take over security operations. The Sri Lankan team is now receiving presidential-level protection, with particular focus on their hotel at Centaurus Mall and travel routes to Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

This heightened security comes after at least eight Sri Lankan players initially decided to return home, a move that required intervention from the Sri Lankan president and stern instructions from the Sri Lanka Cricket board. Pakistan's Interior Minister and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi personally assured the team of their safety, emphasizing that player well-being remains the government's top priority.

Commuters Bear the Brunt of Security Arrangements

The security measures have resulted in massive traffic jams across key areas including Murree Road in Rawalpindi, Faizabad, Zero Point, Faisal Avenue, and around Centaurus Mall. The situation deteriorates significantly during the afternoon when the Sri Lankan team travels from their Islamabad hotel to the Rawalpindi stadium, requiring road closures that take hours to clear.

Both Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) and Rawalpindi traffic authorities have issued multiple advisories warning commuters about expected congestion on major thoroughfares like the Expressway and Srinagar Highway on match days. The traffic chaos in Rawalpindi has been described as more severe, with substantial delays around Murree Road and Faizabad Interchange.

Despite the transportation challenges, the cricket series continues uninterrupted. Pakistan has already secured victory in the first two matches, with the third and final ODI scheduled for Sunday at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The entire tri-series involving Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe will also be hosted in Rawalpindi, meaning these traffic disruptions are likely to persist until the end of November.
