West Indies vs Sri Lanka Test Series Begins in Antigua
WI vs SL Test Series Starts in Antigua

The West Indies and Sri Lanka are set to renew their Test rivalry on Thursday at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, following a rain-marred ODI series and a closely contested T20 series. The two teams enter the two-match series with contrasting objectives in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.

Contrasting WTC Positions

The West Indies currently sit at the bottom of the nine-team WTC table, having lost seven of their eight matches in the current cycle. In contrast, Sri Lanka occupy third place, behind former champions Australia and title-holders South Africa, and are looking to strengthen their bid for a place in next year's final at Lord's. However, Sri Lanka's third-place ranking is somewhat misleading, as it is largely due to a 1-0 home series victory over Bangladesh 12 months ago.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy acknowledged the team's recent struggles in the longest format. "Every Test series is an opportunity for us to grow as a team and strengthen our identity," Sammy said in a Cricket West Indies statement. "Sri Lanka are a quality side, so we know we'll have to be at our best, but we're excited about the challenge ahead." He added, "For us, it's about playing with discipline, showing character when the game gets tough, and representing the West Indies with pride."

Pitch Conditions and Team News

Both Tests in this brief series will be played at the same venue where the two teams played out two draws on placid surfaces in 2021. However, conditions are expected to be different this time, with pitches offering pace, bounce, and considerable seam movement, based on the West Indies first-class season. This should provide a sterner test for the batters.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua da Silva is set to return to the West Indies side after losing his place at the start of 2025. The 28-year-old earned his recall on the back of consecutive outstanding domestic seasons. "It's been really good coming back into the team. I've been accepted and mingling with everyone like I've been here for the last couple of years, so it feels like I have not been away for very long," da Silva said. "I went back to first class cricket, did what I had to do, scored runs and got another opportunity, so I'm trying to make the most of it."

Bowling Attacks

The West Indies have been generally well served by their fast bowlers despite recent struggles. Alzarri Joseph has returned to full fitness and will partner Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph, presenting a searching examination for the Sri Lankan top order. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, boast their own pace threats in Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando, both capable of extracting assistance from helpful surfaces. Fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera is reportedly being preserved for white-ball formats.

Sri Lanka's Batting Hopes

Sri Lanka's batting is built around the experienced trio of captain Dhananjaya de Silva, former captain Dinesh Chandimal, and in-form Pathum Nissanka. They will need to post substantial totals to give their bowlers a chance of achieving a first-ever Test series triumph in the Caribbean.
