Egypt's national football team received a spectacular heroes' welcome on Friday as thousands of jubilant supporters celebrated the Pharaohs' historic FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign despite their dramatic last-16 exit to defending champions Argentina.
Thousands Greet Team at Airport
Waving national flags, singing patriotic songs and carrying banners reading “Egypt's men made us proud,” fans gathered outside Alamein International Airport to greet the players and coaching staff after the country's finest-ever World Cup performance. The celebrations continued with an open-top bus parade through New Alamein, where supporters lined the streets to applaud a team that ended Egypt's long wait for a World Cup victory and reached the knockout stage for the first time in the nation's history.
Salah Receives Emotional Tribute
Captain Mohamed Salah received a particularly emotional reception, with many fans holding posters thanking the Liverpool star for his inspirational leadership throughout the tournament. Although Egypt's campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion with a 3-2 defeat to Argentina after surrendering a two-goal lead in the closing minutes, the team returned home with immense national pride.
Historic Victories and Close Contest
The Pharaohs secured memorable victories over New Zealand in the group stage and Australia in the Round of 32 before pushing Lionel Messi's side to the limit. Supporters also paid tribute to head coach Hossam Hassan, praising his leadership in transforming the national team into one of Africa's most competitive sides.
Contract Extensions Announced
Ahead of the squad's arrival, the Egyptian Football Association announced contract extensions for Hossam Hassan and his twin brother, Ibrahim Hassan, following a remarkable period that included a World Cup breakthrough and a strong run to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.
Presidential Recognition
President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is scheduled to officially receive the players and coaching staff, recognising a team that has inspired millions and restored belief in Egyptian football's future.
