Airspace Shutdown Impacts Multiple Players
The closure of Dubai's airspace, triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East following the United States' airstrikes on Iran on Saturday, has also affected other tennis professionals. Tallon Griekspoor, who withdrew from the title match due to injury, and Andrey Rublev are similarly stuck in the city. All three athletes are scheduled to compete at the upcoming BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, where main-draw play is set to begin on Wednesday, adding urgency to their situation.
Medvedev, the 2021 U.S. Open champion, expressed uncertainty about when flights might resume. In an interview with Bolshe Tennis, he stated, "The situation is unusual, but basically, the only thing is that the airspace is closed, naturally. So, no one knows when we'll be able to fly out. It's not clear whether this will last long or not." He further explained that airport authorities have been continuously delaying the reopening time, leaving everyone in a state of limbo.
Medvedev Remains Calm Amidst Uncertainty
Despite the stressful circumstances, Medvedev reported that he is coping well and maintaining his composure. He highlighted a contrast between his on-court and off-court demeanor, saying, "As strange as that sounds, on the court, I'm very emotional, but in real life, it might actually help me to be more emotional at times - so, for me, everything is normal." He also acknowledged the concern from friends and family, reassuring them that he is safe and managing the delay without major issues.
