Punjab Open Chess Championship Wraps Up with Exciting Finals

The Punjab Open Chess Championship, recognized as the largest chess tournament in the province, has successfully concluded at the Gymnasium Hall of Nishtar Park Sports Complex in Lahore. This two-day competition brought together top chess players from across Punjab, showcasing their strategic skills in a thrilling display of mental prowess.

Event Organization and Participation

Organized by the Punjab Sports Department in collaboration with the Chess Association of Punjab, the championship attracted approximately 350 male and female participants. The event featured multiple categories to cater to diverse skill levels, including masters, amateur, women’s, and U-16 divisions, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive platform for chess enthusiasts.

Prize Distribution and Winners

The championship culminated in a prize distribution ceremony where cash prizes worth hundreds of thousands of rupees were awarded to the top performers. In the Masters category, Asad Ali secured the first position, with Tanveer MD Gillani and Hasan Tahir finishing second and third, respectively. The Amateur category saw M. Umair claim the top spot, followed by Wajid Ali in second place and Zeeshan Ali in third.

For the Women’s category, Fareeha Saddique emerged as the champion, while Noor Fatima Rashid and Sehrish took second and third positions. In the U-16 division, M. Chaudhry won first place, with Ahmed Usman and Ali Seena securing second and third places, respectively.

Officials and Ceremonies

The closing ceremony was attended by several officials and sports administrators, including Rana Nadeem Anjum, Director Sports Punjab, who distributed prizes and commended the players for their outstanding performances. Earlier, Muhammad Ali, Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Punjab, visited the venue to observe matches and interact with participants. He also engaged in an exhibition chess game, which garnered significant interest from attendees.

During the event, Raja Gohar Iqbal, Secretary of the Chess Association of Punjab, presented Muhammad Ali with a commemorative souvenir in recognition of his support for promoting chess in the province.

Future Plans and Appreciation

In his address at the closing ceremony, Secretary Sports Muhammad Ali praised the successful organization of the championship and highlighted the growing popularity of chess in Punjab. He announced that the Sports Department plans to organize an even larger chess event in the near future and confirmed that chess will be included in upcoming provincial competitions, such as the Punjab Games and the Chief Minister Punjab Pink Games.

He noted that the championship was arranged under the leadership of Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar, Provincial Minister for Sports, and served as a valuable platform for emerging chess talent across Punjab. Ali also expressed appreciation for the dedicated efforts of the Sports Board Punjab staff and officials of the Chess Association of Punjab in successfully organizing this mega event.

Unique Atmosphere and Participant Feedback

The competitions on the final day commenced after Iftar and continued late into the night until Sehri, adding a unique and festive atmosphere to the championship. Players from various districts and remote areas of the province praised the organizers for arranging a well-managed and competitive tournament, emphasizing its role in fostering chess development at the grassroots level.
