The 2026 edition of Summer Game Fest has concluded, and it was surprisingly eventful. The nearly week-long event arrived during a challenging period for the gaming industry. Major keynotes were used to demonstrate strength through significant announcements, while avoiding sensitive topics like hardware price increases and the complexities of the live-service market. Both Sony and Microsoft utilized their showcases to reaffirm a renewed focus on proven strategies, including exclusive titles and single-player blockbusters. Meanwhile, publishers largely avoided scheduling releases against Grand Theft Auto VI, and several welcome game announcements were made, particularly for fans of Final Fantasy and Persona. For those who missed the live events, here are the most important storylines.
PlayStation Returns to What Works: A New God of War
After an unsuccessful and costly venture into live-service games, Sony's gaming division appears to have refocused on the single-player epics it is known for. The company's showcase was dominated by Insomniac's Wolverine and the surprise announcement of God of War Laufey.
GTA VI Reshapes the Holiday Release Calendar
The next Grand Theft Auto was not featured in any Summer Game Fest showcases, but its presence was still strongly felt. While many games received release dates, virtually none were scheduled for November, which coincides with the launch of GTA VI. Instead, September is now very busy, and several titles have been pushed into 2027.
Remedy Gets Back on Track with Control Resonant
Alan Wake studio Remedy encountered a setback with the disastrous launch of the multiplayer shooter FBC: Firebreak. However, based on early impressions of the upcoming sequel Control Resonant, the developer seems to be returning to its strengths: mind-bending single-player action games.
Cult Classic Indie Games Return
Indie duo Metanet is back with another return to its N series of platformers, this time focusing on multiplayer. Additionally, fans of the hidden object game Hidden Folks will be pleased to know a sequel is in development, launching a full decade after the original.
Final Fantasy VII's Remake Trilogy Concludes Next Year
As expected, the third and final installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy has been officially announced. Titled Revelation, it launches next spring across all platforms simultaneously. Queen's Blood will also return.
Persona 6 Exists
After a long wait since Persona 5, Atlus has confirmed that Persona 6 is in development. However, the developer provided few details, suggesting the RPG is still in early stages.
Microsoft Shifts Back to Console Exclusives... Kinda
After years of pursuing a multiplatform strategy, Microsoft is partially reversing course. The next major Xbox Game Studios title, Gears of War: E-Day, will be an Xbox console exclusive, contrary to expectations that it would launch on PS5 like last year's Gears remake. However, other first-party titles like Fable and Halo are still planned for PlayStation, leaving the extent of this change unclear.
