WhatsApp to Launch Usernames, Hide Phone Numbers in Privacy Update
WhatsApp to Launch Usernames, Hide Phone Numbers

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging platform used by hundreds of millions globally, announced on Monday that it will introduce a feature allowing users to select unique usernames and hide their phone numbers. The update is designed to enhance privacy by reducing the need to share personal phone numbers when communicating with family, friends, or businesses.

How the New Username System Works

Under the new system, users will be able to choose a distinct username that can be shared with others instead of their phone number. According to WhatsApp, this move is "designed to protect the privacy of your phone number." The company emphasized that restricting access to phone numbers would prevent automatic sharing in scenarios such as being added to a large group chat or messaging a person or business for the first time.

Meta added that there will be no directory to browse and no suggestions, meaning people must know your exact username to contact you. This approach mirrors that of other social media services, where the sheer number of users—Meta claims over three billion—means many may not get their first choice of handle.

Gradual Rollout and Reservation Process

WhatsApp stated that it will gradually roll out username reservations worldwide "over the coming months," notifying users in each country when the feature becomes available. The company also noted that "creators, small businesses and organizations" will be allowed to claim WhatsApp usernames that they already use on fellow Meta products Facebook or Instagram.

This update represents a significant shift for WhatsApp, which has traditionally relied on phone numbers as the primary identifier for user accounts. The change is expected to improve privacy and reduce spam, as users will have more control over who can contact them.
