Average US video game player now 37, report finds
Average US video game player age rises to 37

WASHINGTON: Video games are enjoying a resurgence in the United States, but the demographic profile of players is shifting significantly. According to a new report, the average American video game player is now 37 years old, a notable increase from approximately 29 two decades ago. The industry has seen activity climb back to levels not witnessed since the pandemic-era boom.

Key Findings from the ESA Report

The Entertainment Software Association's annual Essential Facts report challenges long-standing stereotypes about who plays video games. It highlights that over half of all players in the United States are now 35 or older. Stanley Pierre-Louis, president and chief executive of the ESA, noted that this mirrors the demographics of the nation. The rising average age reflects both the aging of a generation that grew up with consoles and an influx of older adults who have taken up gaming as a hobby.

Gender Distribution

The gender split among players also defies the stereotypical image of the young male gamer. Men account for 53 percent of players, while women represent 46 percent. Interestingly, among Baby Boomers, women outnumber men in gaming participation.

Gaming Participation and Revenue

Overall, 67 percent of Americans play video games for at least one hour per week. This broad figure encompasses everything from blockbuster console titles to casual mobile games like Wordle. Revenues have rebounded to $60.7 billion in 2025, the highest since 2021 when pandemic lockdowns drove a surge in both players and spending. After a post-pandemic pullback, the industry has returned to growth.

Industry Self-Regulation

As lawmakers in the United States and Europe consider tougher regulations on screen time, age verification, and in-game spending, Pierre-Louis argued that the US gaming industry's voluntary self-regulation sets it apart. He stated that this framework has given the industry credibility with US lawmakers, a contrast to social media platforms.
