KP Govt Unveils Rs1bn AI Authority, Free Wi-Fi

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan announced on Saturday that the provincial government, led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, is implementing concrete measures to promote technology-driven public service delivery and strengthen modern governance through a series of digital initiatives. He stated that transforming Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into a hub of modern technology remains a top priority, with several flagship projects included in the provincial budget for the current fiscal year.

Establishment of KP Artificial Intelligence Authority

Shafi Jan revealed that the government will establish the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Artificial Intelligence Authority at an estimated cost of Rs1 billion. This authority aims to promote the use of artificial intelligence across public services, improve the efficiency of government institutions, and encourage the integration of AI into the education sector. He emphasized that investment in emerging technologies will create new employment opportunities for young people while equipping the province to meet future technological challenges.

Free Public Wi-Fi and Digital Land Record Modernization

The minister also announced the launch of a free public Wi-Fi service at various public locations across Peshawar, for which Rs500 million has been allocated in the current fiscal year’s budget. He said the initiative will be expanded to other districts of the province in phases. Additionally, Rs374 million has been earmarked for the modernization of the Digital Land Record System, aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in land administration.

Cyber Security and Emergency Services Upgrades

Highlighting the government’s digital governance agenda, Shafi Jan stated that Rs900 million has been allocated for the establishment of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cyber Security Operations Centre. Furthermore, Rs300 million has been set aside for the digital integration of emergency services to improve coordination and ensure faster and more effective responses to public emergencies.

Commitment to Digital Reform

The minister said the province is being prepared for future challenges through the promotion of digital governance in line with the vision of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founding chairman Imran Khan. He reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to pursuing a comprehensive digital reform agenda aimed at delivering transparent, efficient, and citizen-centric public services. He expressed confidence that these initiatives will significantly strengthen technological development and good governance, helping position Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as a leading province in digital innovation and public sector modernization.
