Nintendo has officially announced a remake of the classic game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time during its recent Nintendo Direct presentation on Tuesday. The highly anticipated title is scheduled for release sometime in 2026 and will be available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 console. The company has stated that additional details will be revealed at a later date, leaving fans eager for more information.
First Major Release Since Echoes of Wisdom
This remake marks the first significant installment in the Zelda franchise since Echoes of Wisdom, which was released in 2024 and featured Princess Zelda as the main protagonist. That game followed the 2023 release of Tears of the Kingdom, a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild. Both of those titles received upgraded versions for the Switch 2 when the new console launched last year.
Expanding the Franchise
In addition to the mainline games, Nintendo launched Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment in November, a hack-and-slash title set in the Zelda universe. The company is also looking to expand the franchise beyond video games, following in the footsteps of Super Mario. A live-action Zelda movie is set to debut on April 30th, 2027. Late last year, Nintendo shared images of actors Bo Bragason (as Zelda) and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth (as Link) in costume, suggesting the film will draw inspiration from titles like Breath of the Wild and Twilight Princess.
