Saudi UNESCO Officials Discuss AI Cooperation in Geneva

The president of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, met with UNESCO Director General Khaled El-Enany in Geneva during the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, held on the sidelines of the AI for Good Global Summit. The two officials reviewed strategic cooperation between the Kingdom and UNESCO in artificial intelligence and discussed ways to strengthen international partnerships in developing ethical policies for the technology.

Strategic Cooperation and International Partnerships

Al-Ghamdi praised UNESCO’s international efforts in the field of AI and highlighted the Kingdom’s role in supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He outlined Saudi Arabia’s efforts to establish the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics in Riyadh, which was approved by UNESCO’s General Conference as a Category 2 center under its auspices. The center serves as a global hub for AI research and development, promotes awareness of AI ethics, and builds international capacity.

Saudi Initiatives in AI Ethics

Al-Ghamdi also highlighted the Kingdom’s efforts to translate international AI principles into practical initiatives through programs led by SDAIA. These include the launch of the AI Ethics Principles, the awarding of AI ethics labels to more than 60 companies across the Kingdom, and the introduction of the National AI Index to measure AI adoption across government entities and support responsible, human-centered innovation.
