A powerful earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale struck Sulawesi Island in central Indonesia, resulting in at least one fatality and numerous injuries. The tremor caused significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure, sparking widespread panic among the local population.
Details of the Earthquake
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers. Its epicenter was located about 43 kilometers east-southeast of Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi province. The shallow depth of the quake amplified its impact on the surface.
Immediate Response and Aftershocks
In the wake of the tremor, residents rushed to open spaces for safety, while several hospitals evacuated patients as a precautionary measure. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency reported at least 71 aftershocks, which heightened anxiety among the populace. The series of aftershocks stirred painful memories of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that devastated the region in 2018, claiming thousands of lives.
Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to provide assistance and ensure public safety.
