The Punjab government has announced a large-scale electric bike rental initiative aimed at reducing air pollution and promoting affordable, eco-friendly transport in Lahore. The project is part of broader efforts to tackle rising smog levels and reduce dependence on costly petrol amid increasing fuel prices.
Phase One Details
In the first phase, around 10,000 electric bikes will be introduced for public rental use in Lahore. To support the system, 300 docking and charging stations will be established across the city. The Punjab Housing Authority will provide land for these stations, helping ensure better connectivity between residential areas, commercial zones, and public transport hubs.
Environmental Impact
Officials say the scheme is expected to significantly cut carbon emissions in Lahore, with projections suggesting thousands of tons of annual reductions in CO₂ output, contributing to cleaner air and improved urban livability.
Target Users and Accessibility
The service is being designed as an affordable mobility option for students, workers, and daily commuters, with access planned through a mobile application. However, authorities have yet to finalize the rental pricing model or confirm whether the service will operate on an hourly or daily basis.
