Tarar Calls for Nationwide Climate Awareness Campaign

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Thursday called for launching a massive climate awareness campaign in multiple languages and through diverse communication channels to effectively reach all segments of society.

Green Journalism Conference

Addressing the International Conference on Green Journalism, Media, Climate and Social Responsibility in Islamabad, jointly organized by Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology and COMSTECH, the minister emphasized the need to move beyond discussions on climate change and focus on climate justice.

He said countries that have historically contributed more to fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions bear greater responsibility towards nations that have played a minimal role in causing the crisis but continue to face its consequences.

Pakistan's Vulnerability

Highlighting Pakistan's vulnerability, Tarar noted that the country contributes less than one percent of global carbon emissions, yet remains among the nations most severely affected by climate-related disasters.

The minister urged a cultural shift to make climate change a mainstream public issue, stressing that environmental concerns should receive the same level of attention on social media as other trending topics.

Public Awareness Essential

Describing climate change as one of the gravest challenges facing humanity, he said raising public awareness is an essential step towards addressing the crisis and building resilience against its impacts.

Tarar also proposed a coordinated framework involving ministries, government divisions and relevant stakeholders to promote climate awareness and identify practical measures to tackle environmental challenges.

Appreciation for Organizers

He lauded COMSTECH and the conference organizers for holding the event, saying it reflects a growing recognition of the importance of climate awareness, responsible media coverage and green journalism in shaping public discourse.
