At least two children were killed after a ferry carrying more than 35 people collided with a bridge while crossing the Euphrates River in the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor on Sunday, the Syrian Civil Defense said.
Rescue Operations Underway
More than 15 people were rescued after all those on board fell into the river, the rescue agency said, adding that search and rescue operations were continuing for those still missing. The incident occurred amid flooding along the Euphrates, which has raised water levels and made river travel more hazardous.
Impact on Local Residents
Residents in the area often rely on boats and ferries to cross the river, especially after infrastructure damage from years of conflict. Sunday's collision highlights the ongoing risks faced by civilians using makeshift transport. The Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, deployed teams to the site to assist with rescues and recoveries.
