A World Bank mission recently visited the Tarbela Fifth Extension Hydropower Project to assess the implementation of environmental, social, and occupational health and safety (OHS) measures under the scheme. The delegation comprised Lead Social Development Specialist Dr. Chudi Okafor, Lead Environmental Specialist Pablo Cardinale, Senior Social Development Specialist Imranul Haq, and Senior Environmental Specialist Sana Ahmed, according to sources.
Inspection of Project Sites
During the visit, the delegation inspected various project sites and reviewed the application of environmental, social, and OHS standards within the project's development framework. The mission focused on verifying compliance with World Bank safeguards and ensuring that the project adheres to international best practices.
Briefing by Project Officials
Umair Mannan, General Manager and Project Director of the Tarbela Fifth Extension Project, along with officials from the Environmental and Social Management Unit (ESMU-T5), briefed the delegation on overall progress. The briefing emphasized environmental management, social safeguards, and regulatory compliance. The project aims to add 1,410 megawatts of generation capacity to the existing Tarbela Dam complex.
