The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast hot and humid weather across most parts of the country today, with isolated rain expected in northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. Heat and humidity are likely to continue in the rest of the country.
Scattered Showers in Northern Regions
According to the Met Office, scattered showers are expected in parts of northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir, while warm and humid conditions will prevail in most other areas. Over the past 24 hours, Nokkundi recorded the country's highest temperature at 45°C. It was followed by Dalbandin, Jacobabad and Dadu, where the mercury reached 44°C, while Sukkur recorded 43°C.
Temperature Highlights Across Pakistan
The PMD said temperatures also climbed to 41°C in Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sargodha and Chilas. Meanwhile, Muzaffarabad recorded a maximum temperature of 39°C, while Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta and Gilgit each reached 38°C. The highest temperature recorded in Karachi was 37°C.
Global Heatwave Concerns
Globally, extreme heatwaves continue to raise concerns. Experts warn that record-breaking temperatures across Europe have resulted in an increase in heat-related illnesses, deaths and damage to infrastructure, fueling fears that such extreme weather events could become more frequent.
WHO's Call for Long-Term Measures
The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged European countries to adopt long-term measures to deal with extreme heat. Climate experts also warn that climate change and global warming are likely to make severe heatwaves more frequent in the years ahead.
