The Sindh government has decided to launch a province-wide crackdown against wheat hoarders to stabilise flour prices, with support from police and other law enforcement agencies. The decision was taken during a marathon cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced at a press conference on Tuesday.
Cabinet Orders Indiscriminate Action
Memon said the cabinet ordered indiscriminate action against hoarders after reports that large quantities of wheat were being stockpiled to create an artificial shortage, despite a bumper crop in Sindh and Punjab. "The government will seal warehouses of hoarders and initiate a crackdown to ensure price stability," he added.
Integrated Wheat Management System Approved
The cabinet also approved the introduction of an integrated wheat management system in the food department. The Sindh Information Technology Company (SITC) has been tasked with reviewing the project within a month. Additionally, a committee comprising secretaries of food, agriculture and law has been formed to review the National Wheat Policy 2026-2030 and submit recommendations to the cabinet.
Impact on Flour Prices
The crackdown aims to address the artificial shortage caused by hoarders, which has driven up flour prices in the province. With police and law enforcement agencies involved, the government expects to swiftly seal illegal warehouses and bring hoarders to justice, ensuring a stable supply of wheat and affordable flour for consumers.
