ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday underscored the importance of developing a competitive, innovative and sustainable automotive ecosystem. He stressed that such a system could support economic growth, enhance industrial capacity, generate skilled jobs and advance environmental sustainability through a future-ready automotive sector. Dar chaired a high-level meeting to review the auto and auto parts policy, with a particular focus on accelerating Pakistan’s transition towards Electric Vehicles (EVs), the Office of the DPM said in a statement. The committee was briefed on measures to promote EV adoption and strengthen domestic manufacturing.
Emphasis on Economic Growth and Sustainability
Dar highlighted that a robust automotive ecosystem is vital for Pakistan's economic progress. He noted that by fostering innovation and competition, the sector can significantly contribute to the national economy. The minister also pointed out that a sustainable automotive industry would help reduce carbon emissions and align with global environmental standards.
Focus on Electric Vehicle Transition
The meeting specifically addressed strategies to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in Pakistan. Officials presented an overview of current policies and proposed incentives to encourage both consumers and manufacturers to shift towards EVs. The committee discussed infrastructure development, including charging stations, and the need for local production of EV components to reduce import dependence.
Strengthening Domestic Manufacturing
Another key area of discussion was enhancing local manufacturing capabilities for auto parts. The policy review aimed to identify barriers to domestic production and propose solutions to boost the auto parts industry. Dar emphasized that strengthening local manufacturing would create jobs, reduce trade deficits, and build a resilient supply chain.
The meeting concluded with a directive to finalize a comprehensive action plan to implement the proposed measures, ensuring that Pakistan's automotive sector becomes competitive, innovative, and environmentally sustainable.
