Syria to Launch Direct Damascus-Amsterdam Flights in July 2026
Syria to Start Direct Damascus-Amsterdam Flights July 2026

Syrian Airlines will operate its first direct flight from Damascus to Amsterdam in the first week of July 2026, the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport has confirmed. The announcement marks a significant step in the country's reintegration into global air travel networks after the 13-year civil war that concluded in 2024.

Background of Flight Suspensions

Flights between European cities — except Moscow — and the Syrian Arab Republic were suspended during the civil war, which began in 2011 and ended in 2024. The conflict led to widespread destruction and international sanctions, isolating Syria from most international air travel.

Gradual Return to International Routes

The authority announced that the move reflected the country’s gradual return to regional and international air transport networks, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). Dan Air became the first airline from the European Union to operate a commercial flight from Bucharest, Romania’s capital, to Syria in June 2025.

Discussions with Germany

Aviation authorities are currently in discussions with German officials as the parties consider lifting the ban on flights between the two countries. A decision is anticipated next month, SANA reported. If successful, this would further expand Syria's connectivity with Europe.

Historical Context of Russian Flights

Flights from Russia to Syria were suspended from 2012 to 2018. After that, Moscow became the only European destination to which Syrians could fly directly from Damascus, as Russia was a supporter of former President Bashar Assad, who later received asylum in Moscow. The new Amsterdam route breaks this monopoly and offers a direct link to Western Europe.
