Mysterious Statue Bearing Banksy's Name Appears in Central London

A large statue bearing the signature of the elusive street artist Banksy has appeared on a plinth in central London, igniting speculation that it could be his latest creation. The statue, which emerged on Wednesday just off the prestigious Pall Mall street, depicts a suited man marching forward with one leg off the plinth, carrying a flag that obscures his face.

The artwork was discovered on Waterloo Place, a location surrounded by historic statues of King Edward VII, nurse Florence Nightingale, and the Crimean War Memorial. Crowds of onlookers have reportedly gathered to view the piece since its installation.

Banksy, whose true identity remains officially unconfirmed, has not yet claimed the statue on his Instagram account, which he typically uses to authenticate his works by posting images and captions. This lack of confirmation leaves room for doubt, but the style and signature have fueled excitement among art enthusiasts.

The appearance of the statue comes just over a month after a Reuters investigation claimed to have confirmed Banksy's identity, backing up a similar assertion by the Mail on Sunday tabloid from nearly two decades ago. According to these reports, the artist is a 52-year-old Briton born as Robin Gunningham, who later changed his name to David Jones. The Reuters investigation relied on a New York arrest record from 2000 and witness testimony from a recent visit to Ukraine by Banksy.

This is not the first time Banksy has unveiled an unofficial statue in the British capital. In 2004, his work titled The Drinker, a satirical take on Auguste Rodin's The Thinker, was installed on Shaftesbury Avenue but was soon stolen and endured years of disputed ownership.

Westminster Council, responsible for the area where the new statue has appeared, has not yet responded to requests for comment. As the art world awaits Banksy's official confirmation, the statue continues to draw attention and debate.
